On September 29, 2024, the first cohort of SMART PhD students marked a special milestone with a lively “one-month celebration” and themed class gathering at Hongqiao Park in Guangming District. More than 40 new students came together for a fun-filled afternoon of games, sports, and music—celebrating the official start of their PhD journey. With plenty of laughter, energy, and connection, the SMARTers strengthened friendships, built team spirit, and shared in the joy of this new chapter.

Voices from the Day

“Our SMARTers team-building event was full of laughter and good vibes, all set against the beautiful backdrop of Hongqiao Park. Great food and new friendships brought us closer together. I’m really grateful for this opportunity—it reminded me of how powerful a strong community can be.”

— Jingyi Li, Joint PhD Student, Westlake University

“Our first group activity had an amazing turnout. With the crackling of the grill and the smell of good food in the air, we chatted about our research interests, academic paths, and even swapped some life stories. Playing sports and singing together gave us a chance to see one another beyond the lab. I'm excited for what’s ahead with this incredible group!”
— Qian Zhu, Joint PhD Student, Westlake University

“The one-month party and class meeting were such a great experience. I got to meet and talk with so many classmates I hadn’t had a chance to connect with before. The stress and discomfort I’d felt adjusting to a new environment started to fade away thanks to the fun icebreakers and warm atmosphere.”
— Ruolan Sun, Joint PhD Student, Westlake University

With the gentle breeze of early autumn in Shenzhen, the first class gathering came to a joyful close. As laughter echoed through the park, the SMARTers officially kicked off their PhD journeys together. Here's to following your dreams, embracing challenges, and making the most of every step along the way. We can’t wait for the next time we’re all together—there are many more memories to make!
