His research interests are perioperative blood management, perioperative ultrasound and new anesthetics development. He has published 358 papers in English and more than 200 papers in Chinese.

He graduated from Enshi Medical School in 1982 and received an MD degree from Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in 1988. He was trained as an anesthesia resident in the 2nd Hospital of Huangshi City and Fuwai Hospital in Beijing. He was a research fellow at UCSF, CA, from 1989 to 1991, and a visiting assistant professor and attending anesthesiologist at SWMC, TX, USA, from 1991 to 1993.
